Let’s get real for a second. The uncertainty these days is taking its toll on everyone. We’ve been forced to slow down. Not to mention if you struggle with food and body issues even at the slightest amount, your stress and fear are probably off the chain right now.
I don’t mean to scare you but I just want everyone to be aware of what their body is telling them so tackling the current situation isn’t harder than what it already is.
Doing what I do, I’ve seen what the women in our community are facing, and it has made me realize something pretty significant.
I struggled with debilitating binges and painful yo-yo dieting for over a decade. And let me tell you, I can’t imagine how that struggle would be like on top of all the extra worries we’re facing now.
It breaks my heart to see what I’m seeing in our community, and my team and I are here to do something about it!
I still remember the day I made a promise to myself that everyday for the rest of my life I’ll make sure to help people that are going through the same struggles as I did and show them the easy way out (because it exists). And I’m taking this more seriously than ever.
If you’re terrified not only of an uncertain future, but also of stress eating and weight gain while stuck at home, stay with me! You’re going to want to hear this.
I’ve made a list of the top 4 food-related struggles I’ve seen since this crazy situation started. First, I’m going to share them with you. Then, I’ll let you in on how you can stop them from consuming your time on lockdown.
Life is chaotic enough right now. Don’t let the fear of isolation cravings and quarantine weight gain make things worse!
This is not the time for any extra stress. Second, the world needs you to be the best version of YOU, especially now. Not only for yourself, but also for your loved ones. So let’s do what we can to make food one less thing for you to worry about right now!
So what are the 4 main food fears I’ve been seeing, and how can you stop them from stopping you?
Let’s get into it here!
#1: Going back to mainstream food advice (like dieting). What do people tend to do in times of uncertainty? We cling to what we are most familiar with.
Unfortunately, with food, the most “familiar” strategy is good ol’ fashioned dieting. You know, controlling your food, following strict rules about what you can and can’t eat, and hoping for the best.
So you find yourself stuck at home, wandering around the house. The cabinets are stocked. And all you can think about is the bread, cookies, and chips on your shelf that you “can’t” eat.
Sure, you might try to willpower your way through it. But sooner or later, the restrictive thoughts and quarantine stress are the one-two punch that lead you to scour the cabinets.
(Funny what happens when you tell yourself NOT to do something, right?)
So the first thing I see women doing is going back to the familiar food rules–the ones that always backfire. Only this time they backfire with the extra power of chaotic times.
#2: Food scarcity thoughts (that feel real). Maybe you’re on a fixed budget, or you have a set amount of food allotted for yourself and your family. Or you might just fear that your local grocery store will have empty shelves for an indefinite time.
Regardless of the why, if you believe that food is scarce, your brain does the same thing. It sets off the alarm bells and drives you to obsess about what is in (or NOT in) the fridge. And from there, to eat as much as you can “just in case.”
#3: Overall heightened emotional states (that lead to stress eating). At some point, nearly everyone has reached for a cookie or a candy bar to make worry disappear. Emotional eating is a thing for a lot of us, even in normal times.
Now, add an unexpected situation where your everyday core needs are threatened. Your first instinct is to stop the fear at any cost. If you’ve ever struggled with food, a bag of chips is likely your go-to stress response. (And unfortunately, it probably won’t stop with just one bag…)
#4: The side effects of isolation. Everyone is feeling the social distance disconnection these days. No matter how many Skype calls we make or how much time we spend on Facebook, it’s not the same as “IRL” connections. In short, isolation fears are everywhere.
Isolation fears add fuel to the food struggle fire. The more agitated you get, the easier it is to depend on food to make it stop.
These are the trending struggles I’ve seen the most out there. So if any of them sound like you, know that you’re NOT alone, no matter how it feels right now.
