Back in the day, I believed that changing my body meant battling my body. Trust me, when it came to the fight, I brought my A-game.
I thought I had a slow metabolism, so it controlled every bite or end up binging. I hated the way my body looked, so it was either go all-out at the gym or gain a ton of weight.
Whether I outright said it or not, I believed that my body was working against me.
If you’ve ever felt like your body is fighting you, stay with me. I’m going to prove that your body is on your side. It isn’t holding onto weight just to make you miserable, and it’s NOT your enemy.
Your body actually wants you to feel alive, energized, and supported. But when you’re constantly fighting it with strict diets and punishing workouts, it has a pretty tough time supporting you.
But in the end, your body IS on your side. Today I’m sharing the top 4 signs that this is the case!
I’ll share a few stories from my life and my client’s lives. I’ll even show you evidence from your life that you might not have considered.
Most importantly, I’ll remind you that your body doesn’t need punishing workouts and strict diets in order to work with you. (In fact, these are the things that make your struggle ten times worse!)
Ready to debunk some body myths with real-life evidence? I’ll show you 4 signs that your body is on your side, and how to work with it to get the change you desire (no crazy diets or workouts required!)
Sign #1: Stopping the body battle restores your natural cycle. Now, this might sound a little out there, or even irrelevant. But it’s a lot more significant than it you might think.
Many of the women who have gone through our program have reported an interesting side effect. They’ve started having regular menstrual cycles again.
Now, you might wonder what that has to do with body battles and weight loss fails. But if your menstrual cycle stops (or is disrupted), it’s a sign that your body is in a serious stress response.
It’s a warning sign that your body is in pure chaos.
Your body isn’t meant to have raging PMS and sporadic periods. It’s meant to have a regular monthly cycle, and any disturbances indicate that there’s some major stress going on.
And the chaos and stress of dieting and binging just might be the reason your cycle is out of whack.
We’ve worked with women who’ve been fighting their body their whole life. Disordered eating, extreme dieting, binging, crazy intense workouts, you name it.
Along with that madness, our clients have frequently had some serious menstrual disruptions.
Some women come to us not having had a cycle in six months. Even a year or more. (We once had a client who hadn’t had a cycle in 16 years.)
But here’s where it gets interesting…
After a few weeks in our program, many of our clients reported that their normal menstrual cycles returned. In just a few weeks of honoring their bodies, this natural process returned on its own.
This alone is a sign that your body knows how to function. It’s a hint that your body wants to support you, but it needs you to support it back.
So if all it takes is a little bit of body love to restore a natural cycle, it’s a sign that your body wants to support you. It just needs your support in return.
Sign #2: A little bit of rest turns into a lot of results. I used to work out like a maniac. I was in the gym seven days a week, hitting it hard every day with high intensity training. (I took that “no days off” philosophy very seriously.)
I told myself that I was using exercise to keep my body fit. But to be honest, I was hitting the gym every day to “counteract the damage” when I binged. (Not that it ever actually worked…)
I thought that extreme workouts were the only way to keep my body under control. If I didn’t work out every day, I’d gain a ton of weight and lose all control.
You can imagine my panic when I had a 4-wheeler accident, broke my ribs, and the gym was indefinitely off the table.
I was terrified that I’d lose control with food, gain weight, and have no way to get the weight off.
Turns out that the exact opposite happened…
When I was forced to rest, my body started to recalibrate itself.
My PMS symptoms improved. My cravings went down. I looked a lot less puffy and inflamed. I binged less often.
And I lost weight.
Turns out that the harder I fought to lose weight, the more my body kept the weight on. My constant stressed-out state made my body cling to every ounce.
But when I slowed down and took care of myself, my body returned to its center. I was able to heal and restore balance. And the results spoke for themselves.
Our coaching director at Beating Binge Eating, Stella, has a similar story.
For years she ran half-marathons. But it wasn’t only for the sake of athletic achievement. She feared that if she didn’t pour herself into high-powered athletic events, she’d gain weight.
Then a few months before her wedding, those punishing workouts caught up with her. She tore her hamstring, which meant no long-distance runs until it healed.
But when she was forced to slow down, her body responded in a way that she never expected. Her injury healed. She had fewer cravings. She released weight. Best of all, she felt amazing and confident on her wedding day.
Like me, her body needed her to slow down, honor it, and take care of it. When she did, the results were magical.
I’m not saying don’t work out. I’m not saying don’t challenge yourself. I’m only saying that too much of a good thing will backfire.
But if you work with your body it’ll work with you. Challenge yourself if you like, but give your body ample rest, too. You’ll get the benefits of exercise without turning your body into a big ball of stress.
Sign #3: Natural balance returns (with fewer chemical interventions). I started taking thyroid medication when I was 18 years old. Unfortunately, the medicine ended up doing more harm than good. An incorrect dosing regimen suppressed my thyroid’s natural abilities, and it stopped functioning properly.
This meant that every time I tried to come off the medication, I felt like death. My thyroid couldn’t function without the medicine, but the medicine wasn’t doing its job anymore. It was a painful catch-22 that led to even more issues…
My new doctor and I tried to adjust my thyroid with a different dosing regimen, but nothing seemed to work. Eventually the imbalance led to severe adrenal fatigue. My doctor told me that the only thing to do now was to stop the medicine and let my body recover.
Needless to say, that terrified me.
My thyroid hadn’t worked properly in 12 years. But I feared that without the medicine, I’d be even worse off. I saw myself gaining weight. Feeling like I was on death’s door. And of course, in the midst of it all, probably being triggered to binge again.
But with my doctor’s guidance, we decided to take the plunge, and I stopped the drug.
Honestly, I felt pretty miserable for about a month after I discontinued the drug. Slowly but surely, though, I got through it. (P.S. Don’t make any changes to your medications without consulting your doctor first!)
The transition was successful, and my body returned to balance. My thyroid function returned, and I feel alive and amazing again.
It came down to my stopping what wasn’t working, caring for my body, and letting it restore its natural function.
This is another sign that your body wants the best for you. But you need to bring your best for it, too.
Sign #4: Your body shows up for you every day (without being prompted). Looking for the most basic proof of all that your body is on your side?
Your body shows up for you in multiple ways, every second of every day. These are ways that are SO basic, you might look right past them.
I’m guessing that right now, you’re breathing. If you touch the inside of your wrist or the side of your neck, you’ll feel a pulse. Your cells are regenerating themselves. Your immune responses are preventing you from getting sick.
All these things are happening, and you don’t have to think about them at all. It’s the ultimate proof that your body wants you to live, and that it always has your back.
Now, here’s the biggest question of all: do you have your body’s back?
Right now, your body might not trust you. If you’ve been holding back food, it might not trust that you’ll feed it properly. If you’ve been putting it through punishing workouts, it might need more healing time to restore balance.
But the more you show up for yourself and take care of your body, the more you’ll restore a positive partnership with it. And trust me, you will love the results!
But first, you have to stop the fight. Put down the sword, end the body war, and partner with your body. Everything you want is on the other side of that mutual trust. Freedom, energy, ease with food, less cravings, weight release–all of it.
Now, you might not see how this could work for you. But no matter what you’re dealing with, I assure you that it can. I’ll show you how!
