Lately, there’s been a lot of focus on body positivity. In fact, it seems to have become a full-on Social Media movement. And for the most part, that’s a beautiful thing!
After all, everyone deserves to feel healthy, happy, and empowered in their own skin. And the reminders to love yourself the way you are indicate a trend away from body shaming and toward big-time body love.
But as with all good intentions, the body positivity movement does have it’s flip-side…
Now, you might be wondering what the downside might be…
But the truth is that sometimes, when you look in the mirror, you DON’T like what you see. And all the affirmations to see yourself as beautiful don’t always make is easier if you feel like you can’t quite get there.
In fact, sometimes, premature “happy thoughts” can create more of an internal struggle.
Now, I help women free themselves of the struggle of binge eating and body image issues. But it wasn’t always like that in my world.
There was a time when I woke up every morning, looked in the mirror, and cringed at what I saw. I used to believe that to feel peaceful on the inside, I had to change how I looked on the outside.
Needless to say, I was in a constant battle with my body. And unfortunately, it wasn’t something I could wish away with a few happy affirmations.
But eventually, I took the steps to reconnect with myself, step into my power, and regain my confidence. And “body love” became second nature to me.
The good news is that you can do the same for yourself…
I’ve narrowed it down to four steps. Four steps that I used not only to end my struggle with body love but also to free thousands of other women from those same battles.
How do you turn “body love” from a nice idea into a game-changing practice that you can start using TODAY?
Let’s get into it here!

Step 1: Accept where you are right now. It might sound counterintuitive, but if you want to change the way you feel about your body, you’ve got to accept where it is right now. And that means letting go of the attachment to “loving your body.”
I’m talking about accepting yourself as you are without insisting that you love what you see.
Maybe you’ve been reluctant to try the whole body-love thing. You might believe that if you love yourself as you are, you’ll never push yourself to change.
But that’s where the misconception comes in. Let me explain what I mean by that…
“Acceptance” isn’t about throwing away your goals and desires. It only means acknowledging where you are right now. And understanding that you’re on a journey to a better place.
It means treating yourself with kindness as you walk the path rather than insisting that you change before granting yourself love, honor, and respect.
Accepting is the key to lasting change. Because from a state of acceptance, you have the power to go anywhere you wish. You just have to start from where you are now, and know that you’re worthy of acceptance TODAY.
Step 2: Make “Body Love” an ACTION. Sometimes the idea of loving yourself as you are is a big leap. But there IS a way to transition from resentment to respect.
And it starts with shifting “love” from something you’re fixated on feeling to an ACTION.
What does that mean? It means taking loving actions for your body. Things like properly nourishing your body, giving it plenty of hydration, and sufficient rest, just for starters!
Loving actions show your body that you’re ready and willing to take care of it. That your body is worthy of respect. And that you’re going to demonstrate your love through actions instead of just words.
Loving actions don’t require that your body look a certain way before they’ll work. They don’t ask you to believe something you’re not ready to accept (as “positive affirmations” tend to do). They’re simple, effective, and they’re the first step toward a loving partnership with your body.
Step 3: Build a loving partnership with your body. Imagine that you had a relationship that was on the rocks, and you wanted to heal it. What are your options?
You could either show up with love, respect, and a desire to heal with your partner. OR you could choose to criticize, shame, and withhold love from your partner.
Which pathway would lead to a better partnership?
Just the same, if you want to repair the relationship with your body, a loving partnership is the way to go. And that partnership starts with nourishing, honoring, and caring for your body as though it were a best friend.
Believe it or not, your body is on your side. Every day, she’s got your back. She keeps your heart beating, your lungs breathing, and your legs moving. It can be a thankless job.
Unless, of course, you decide to start acknowledging everything that she does!
This means dropping the fight. Letting go of control. And showing up for her in the same way she shows up for you.
That means taking small self-care steps every day. The more you appreciate your body, the more those good feelings will grow. And appreciation will eventually turn to love.
Step #4: Show yourself some gratitude. Like we said before, trying to jump from self-loathing to self-love can do more harm than good. It can make you feel broken, hopeless, and stuck. Not the point of something that’s supposed to make you feel good, right?
So if you’re feeling shame, hate, or resentment for what you see in the mirror right now, don’t think that you have to shift to rose-colored glasses overnight.
Instead, start consistently practicing body appreciation. Acknowledge everything that your body does for you, one thing at a time. Appreciate that your legs carry you where you want to go. Your arms let you hug someone you love. And your heart keeps beating without your asking it to.
Feel into that appreciation. Let it grow into genuine gratitude. Practice gratitude with consistency and self-love will not be far behind.
So there you have it! Four steps to help you genuinely love your body, one step at a time.
